DESCRIPTION:Vintage Iron owner Rick Doughty\, recently lost his son Max to the devastating effects of depression. In Max’s honor\, he has reached out to Road 2 Recover to create an event designed to generate funds specifically geared for injured riders and racers that may need the resources to deal with the onslaught of depression. \nFighting the Dark\nDepression is so much more than the disappointment of not making the podium or being side lined with an injury. Depression may start with harmless disappointment but unchecked it can advance like many other illnesses\, to the point that it becomes debilitating or even fatal. Depression is not the result of a negative attitude but quite the opposite. Upbeat\, positive people can succumb to the overwhelming effects. The real physical manifestations are many. Distortion of thinking / reason\, body /joint pain\, appetite loss and worst of all\, loss of hope. \nPeople don’t choose to be depressed but they can choose how to combat it. Joining together it is a winnable fight. The life you save may one day be your own or someone you love. \n \nEvent\nThe First Annual Max Matters Motocross is scheduled for Sunday\, October 4th and will be hosted at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino CA. Classes will include 85cc and up\, vintage to modern\, young to not so young. The hillside course will be challenging but deliberately accommodating to all skill levels. Entry fees for Members receive the first entry for $35 and subsequent entries are $20. Non-members receive the first entry for $45 and subsequent entries are $20. Registration and fees are handled at the event. American Retrocross will be the host club organizing the event. Riders of all ages and skill levels will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from some of the nation’s top motocross/supercross riders and coaches at a premier stop of the AMA Pro Motocross National circuit at Fox Raceway. With the support and generosity of the motorcycle community\, proceeds from this event will go to benefit Jessy Nelson and Micky Dymond in their R2R Funds. \nThis year’s star-studded lineup of coaches includes Jessy Nelson\, Cole Seely\, Broc Tickle\, Blake Savage\, Jeff Ward\, Doug Dubach\, Ryan Honstein\, Brandon Mays and Carlen Gardner. The event will kick off on Thursday morning at 8 a.m. with registration and breakfast\, followed by a Rider/Coach Meeting at 9 a.m. Participants will receive ample riding time with their coaches as the first two sessions take place from 10 a.m. – 2:20 p.m.\, before a catered lunch at 12:25 p.m. Riders will then hit the track once again from 1:30 – 3:55 p.m. for the final two rounds of riding\, and the day will conclude with an information-packed Q&A session with riders\, coaches and vendors to provide a complete breakdown of the day’s activities. To make sure that each attendee gets the quality time needed to increase their skills\, the school will be capped at 100 entries. \nWith a minimum donation of $150 per rider\, participants will have a full day packed with years of knowledge and experience. This required a radical surgery removing a large portion of his jaw bone and 17 rounds of radiation. To occupy his mind and hands\, he found and purchased two 500s to work on when he was fighting to survive during his recovery. This led to a discussion with me about rebuilding 500s and a garage build project. After all\, the two of us grew up racing together in Arizona and we’ve both since become firefighters. Cancer within the fire service is rampant due to the exposure to carcinogenic materials on the job\, making this project something very personal to both of us. \n  \nWhen Justin got the bikes\, they were pretty beat up. We had to tear them all the way down to the frame. After reviewing the needed parts and getting a list together\, parts were ordered. We were ready to get down to business. The frames were repainted and the bikes were rebuilt from the frame up. This was a 3 to 4-month process to complete and really helped Justin to deal with his serious health issues. One of the bikes Justin plans to keep and ride as a reminder of the single most difficult thing he’s ever had to deal with. Amazingly this picture was shot from the stadium seats around the 17th row by David\, an amatuer photographer who was attending his first Supercross race. \nDavid took the 4X6 Kodak print to the next race in Charlotte and asked Ricky to sign it for him. Ricky instead asked David if he could keep the photo and David obliged. A few minutes later David was feeling remorse for not leaving his contact info with Ricky. He returned only to find Ricky had left. He gave his info to Ricky’s mechanic. \nLong story short Ricky gave the photo to Johnny O’Mara from Oakley to make copies for him. From there everyone has Oakley loved the photo but didn’t know how to reach the photographer. Jim Jannard the founder of Oakley decided to run with it and beg for forgiveness if the photographer ever came forward. So the second half of 1997 the poster went into production.
